Oct. 30th, 2005

It's been ages since I've updated, mostly because I've been buried in research trying to get ready for NaNoWriMo. Two more days until I start writing! It's going to be sort of a historical fiction about an arranged marriage between a Roman patrician and a Gaulish tribeswoman. Only I'm giving it a fictional setting that's loosely based on ancient Rome (a la Guy Gavriel Kay's books) so I don't get slowed down trying to get all the details exactly right. Once Nov. 1st comes I'm not going to have any more time for research, so I figure this way I'll feel more comfortable fudging the details as I go. And then later on, if I actually like the story, I can go back and adapt it to an authentic Roman setting if I want. Or just leave it as fantasy if it works that way. Or whatever.

austin360 is in town this weekend and we're having a wonderful time. Yesterday, after a disastrous attempt to go out for breakfast (who stops serving breakfast at 11:00 a.m. on a Saturday, anyway?) we decided to go shopping. Visited Williams Sonoma and Anthropologie and then headed over to the Galleria for stops at Sephora, Kate Spade and Tiffany's. Then we went to the Angelika theater downtown for a double feature. First we saw Where the Truth Lies, the NC-17 Atom Egoyan flick with Colin Firth and Keven Bacon. Whoa, was that a boring movie. Then, after a nice dinner break we caught Good Night, and Good Luck, which was much better. I was still a little disappointed, though. After all the good reviews I was expecting to enjoy it more than I did.

Right now austin360's off visiting her family. She's coming back over here later today and then we're going to a test screening of A Scanner Darkly, which I'm way excited about. I've never been a part of a test audience before. In the meantime, we're taking the munchkin over to a pumpkin patch to get some pumpkins to carve, and I think I may make a white chocolate pumpkin cake. It's a pumpkin-themed day!
