Happiest of happy birthdays to the wonderful dutch38 today! Hope you have a great one, darling!

And to the rest of you, happy Free Comic Book Day! Now hurry and run out to your local comic book store and pick yourselves up some free comics. I got myself an X-Men and a Justice League Unlimited and a Superman, all for free. It's possible I may have also picked up Angel: Old Friends #3 and, er, the Angel Script Book for "A Hole in the World." Because how could I resist? It's only like the Best. Episode. Ever. I did refrain from buying the next issue of Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, however. Even though I really want to know what happens next. But I'd rather wait for the next graphic novel to come out so I can read it all at once.

Happy, happy birthday, dutch38! Hope you are being spoiled mightily.

I'm so glad you posted about Free Comic Book Day, Sus--I'm taking the Hoffmann kids later. And I think the hardcover Astonishing X-Men with both volumes in it just came out...

Not that I'm trying to tempt you or anything, but don't you think Joss would love to sign it at Comic Con this year? Over breakfast?

I've alredy got both volumes in softcover. I was just drooling over issue #13 (and apparently #14 just came out, too, but I didn't see it) because I want to know what is up with Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club! And if Kitty and Colossus will be able to work things out! And if Wolverine will continue to be snarky and look hot in a wife-beater!

I think I dropped the comic and said, "WHOA!" at that last page of #12. And I don't even know that much. :cavorts around on your shoulder: Don't you think Joss would be really impressed if you had single issues for him to sign? :muahahahaha:

I've been worried about the X3 movie because, well, Brett Ratner, people. But knowing that they stole a chunk of the plot from "Gifted" intrigues me...

You are evil. But I was considering bringing the Serenity compilation for him to sign this year. Or maybe the Visual Companion. And then cornering him and asking him a lot of very pointed questions about why he feels the need to hurt me so much.

And you know what his reply will be? "Am I not the very King of Comedy?" And then he will laugh, throw a smoke bomb, and disappear.

:realizes I have almost no Serenity icons:

In your honor, I went seeking comic books, which I have *never* read before. I tried to find the Angel one you spoke of, but no luck. However, I did find the #14 by Joss, so I got it. I know I'm in the middle (they had the first two books) but since I'd never read one, I figured I'd be better just getting the one and deciding before buying the whole book. I have the DK Guide to the X-men that I bought at Costco years ago after the movie came out, so I'll use that to brush up on any characters I don't know.

I hope you enjoy it! It'll probably be kinda disorienting jumping into an issue in the middle of an arc like that, but hopefully Joss' trademark wit and knack for character development will shine through.

I've really enjoyed his Astonishing X-Men, far more than any of the other X-Men comics I've read, most of which I found kinda lame. His Serenity comics are good, too, although I don't like them quite as much as Astonishing X-Men.

It was very good, if a bit unsatisfying because there wasn't much of it. I may ask for Gifted for my B-day next month (I already got Dinosaurs for Mother's Day). I did some looking on-line. Have you read his Buffy-Origin's one?

The Simpson's one I got was more enjoyable because it was longer and a complete story.

Check me out. Comic newbie at the age of almost-35.

Have you read his Buffy-Origin's one?

I haven't--I've never run across them in a store, but I'm considering adding it to my Amazon wish list. My instinct says anything actually written by Joss is worth a read and anything not--probably isn't.

Although I have heard some of the recent Spike comics aren't too bad, so you may want to look into those, given your interest in Captain Peroxide. ;) I was very disappointed in Angel: The Curse, and while Angel: Old Friends is a little better, it's still pretty much only as good as halfway-decent fan fic. And for some reason, no one but astridv seems able to actually draw Boreanaz in a recognizable manner.

ylee does lots of Buffyverse comics reviews in her LJ, and you can probably find lots of other reviews online, if you're interested in figuring out which are worth the money.
