"Today we have a vision of a Texas where opportunity knows no race, no gender, no color — a glimpse of the possibilities of what can happen in government if we simply open the doors and let the people in."

Ann Richards
1933-2006

The very first vote I ever cast was for Ann Richards. She was an inspiration to me, both as an example of what a strong, outspoken woman could accomplish, and as a model for what a passionate, dedicated public servant should be. There is no one else like her, and her loss is a great one.

Ann, you were a helluva lady. Thanks for all the good times.

NPR did a remembrance of her this morning. It's a good listen.

How cool that she received your first vote.

I was so sad when I read the headline on cnn.com this morning. I remember always *wishing* I could have voted for her.

That picture is gold.

The Today Show ran her whole "Poor George" speech this morning. Even better than I remembered. She was right--I *did* need to hear what a real Texas voice sounded like, and she was one of my favorite voices from anywhere.
