leverage team carnival

My heart expands, 'tis grown a bulge in it...

So I've been not-so-good with the updating the last couple weeks and I've missed a couple of birthdays. So happy belated birthday wishes to alanao and zandras_court and anyone else I missed. And happy birthday today to pookha.

My back pain continues to be an ongoing saga. The prednisone the orthopede prescribed helped a lot, as did the stretching exercises the physical therapist assigned. The therapy itself just consisted of electro-whatever where they hook some electrodes to my back and I got to lay on a heating pad for twenty minutes and read a book while they ran a mild electric current through me. Kinda weird feeling, but not exactly uncomfortable. Don't know how much it actually helped, but I did get better enough to discontinue the therapy. But then I had more allergies, and sneezing made it bad all over again, which could possibly mean I have a herniated disc--which is apparently hard to diagnose and I don't have some of the common symptoms, so maybe I don't, but it doesn't really matter that much because there's nothing more to be done for it than what I've been doing anyway. So bleh.

But I did go to my first yoga class today. Most of ya'll probably don't know me well enough to know what a momentous event this is. I don't do classes. I don't talk to strangers. I don't join or participate or get involved. I don't exercise in front of people. However, this whole back thing finally forced me to take drastic measures. So I called a nearby yoga studio and dropped in for a beginner's class today. And it wasn't bad at all. In fact, I think I really liked it.

Don't get me wrong it was totally intimidating at first and I was pretty much petrified. But once we actually got started I sort of forgot all of that and got into and had a pretty good time. I was surprised by how much the yoga I'd done at home with DVDs seemed to have prepared me, though. I actually felt like my form was pretty good, and if it hadn't been for the limitations of my back I'd have been doing most of the postures with no real trouble at all.

The only bad part was during the relaxation at the end, the instructor put on a CD of some dude reciting poetry over new-agey music, only the dude sounded just like Mickey from Doctor Who. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the poem actually had the word "effulgent" in it and I just about freaking lost it and started giggling right there in the middle of corpse pose (and only the Buffy/Angel freaks among you will truly understand why).

My back feels a lot better now though, so hopefully I didn't do anything to make it worse. I tried to be pretty careful and not strain to hard, but we'll see how it feels tomorrow. Assuming I haven't accidentally crippled myself or anything, I'm going to try going twice a week from now on. Look at me, going to yoga class!
